The Washington University Center for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome at Barnes-Jewish Hospital Welcomes You Thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition that involves compression of the nerves or blood vessels that pass through the base of the neck. This can lead to disabling pain in the neck and shoulder, as well as pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hands and fingers. Center Director Robert Thompson, MD, is nationally recognized for his treatment of professional and other athletes as well as those who acquire the condition through other activities.
